Wanted to talk about Scripps identity in a lot of different forms
Wanted to focus on sentiment and student pride and embracing our identity
How can we do this, how do we do this, could we do this better?
o Scripps pride starts outside of Scripps
o Telling people that it’s a women's college but "don’t worry there are guys"
o Always defending the choice to go to a women's college
o "What does a women's college have to offer you?"
What do you think about people who are trans or want a female PGP?
o We don’t admit men for some very good reasons that we embrace, but what about the
o Scripps' technical policy is if you are a female on your birth certificate
o Don't know how other colleges think about this
o Trans voices don’t seem to be heard very much, "I choose to be around only woman, so
trans women are a part of the deal"
o I choose to go to the women's college to be around all women, how do I respond?
Scripps and women's college education is a very valuable thing still
o Not necessarily exclusionary to have a space for a specific group, like a space for women
o Interesting thing about Scripps is there is a division between the student body, either love and came here for women's college, and some came here despite that
Conditional women's college
o Admissions sells it as a conditional women's college and not entirely one like Smith or
Wellsley or Holyoke
Do the leaders on campus make being at a women's college more relevant once you're here?
o You can go through time at Scripps without understanding the importance of feminism and
leave Scripps the same way you came in.
o You have to make the effort to learn about it
o A woman's role in patriarchy and a woman's place in society
o At 100 Days there was a very jovial and free environment at all women parties
First time that they had the surge of Scripps pride
Is there a way we can do better?
o When did we have Scripps pride and why?
When the CMC girl wrote that gender article and Scrippsies commented and made sure she knew about the power of the women at Scripps
That was the moment she was proud
o Seeing other people's pride in being here instead of the other 4Cs or other institutions is a
point of pride
o It's hard because other schools have pride because of sporting events
o How do we foster that feeling of pride without the sports community?
o How do we come together without negative action and be really proud of each other?
We don’t make enough use of the public space at Scripps
o Maybe if more events were public, outside and didn’t necessarily have to be invited then
you would just go and have fun.
o Outside events more at the other schools
Other people on the other campuses are so much more proud of Scripps than us
o OMG the motley is my favorite place
o We take for granted the incredible people and places on campus
o Doing amazing things should not be normalized, we take for granted the beauty
Everyone was excited about yogurt
The community really comes together at Tea on Wednesday and that its hosted by different groups and has food
o Want more things like that
o Like it because it was consistent
Back in the day we had our own version of TNC
What if we made Thursday at 4 bouncy house time?
o Some other regular social events
o We spend a lot of money on snack, but it’s a bloodbath sometimes!
o Maybe could we make it more social
o It is just people filing in and out
There's an idea that you need to go off campus for your social life
o Detrimental to our community
o Would be beneficial to have more social party-esque spaces
o Maybe a student thing apart from the college, like a Scripps TNC
o We want things that we can all be together on campus
o Senior class bachelorette party before wedding party would be sweet!
Could we use the Stu U before social events to bring people together?
At Scripps our halls are not the hang out place, we are more quiet and sensitive
o At other schools res halls are more open and exciting and communal
o A dorm social life is much more at other schools
o Scripps doesn’t have just year dorms, and there are great things about that, but there is a lot
cohesiveness in the residence halls
Almost wish we could have res halls in the first few years at least
How can we strengthen our peer mentor groups so we can make them have more community?
o Its impossible to get all of the mentees to get together
At Scripps the dorms are really nice, but the community is not strong
o What can we do to improve the residence hall life?
o Maybe dorm Olympics and you felt more connected to our dorms
o Old Dorm v New Dorm thing not Dorsey or Routt specific
o What if every dorm had a Sunday dinner and eat together?
o What if it was forced
o If it was a recurring event
o Weekly dorm snack or something?
NSP needs to be re done
o As current team leader, you get a ton of funding and need to do more dorm stuff
o Anything that needs to be restructured with hall life?
For Pomona, the sponsors live in the hall with the FY
o Maybe for NSP we would have reps to bring the heart of the hall together
o Now there aren't peer mentors who live in the dorms necessarily.
Hall Council, now SAS Senate
o Now we have Peer Mentors, Team Leaders, RA's and Hall Council
Community depends on how well these people work together
o We have so much fragmentation in general at Scripps
NSP needs to be revamped and you need to make sure that people are getting together more
Power Down does not work because no one cares about comp between the dorms
o Consistent dorm programming
o Even rewards for things like who had the highest GPA that semester
o Important things about competition is that it is a team activity
In all dorms we have common rooms/living rooms, but we don’t have places that are as easy to sit
down and hang out in the hallway or talk.
As RA's we really try to have an open door policy and then we have space
Noisy hour! Having doors open and music playing and have it be social hour and mingle
o Encouraging people to have doors open all the time would be hard
o But noisy hour would make it easier to make communication
We are stuck because no one is doing it
If everyone leaves their doors open that would be good
NSP need to incorporate older students too, because seniors can help with dorm activities
If we had NSP positions that were only for and more attractive for seniors
It might be a problem because the seniors don't care about the dorm community
Having a culture-setter who is an older student in the dorm
o Having a party in a Froutt suite once
Have a mandatory event with Peer Mentors, RA and Hall Senator
o Its not enforced right now
o It needs to be enforced
o Never fostered the Peer Mentor/RA relationships, but we need to make it a group of people working together to get stuff done
o There needs to be a community in the dorm for this
Instead of departmental initiative in the spring, maybe having dorm week instead
RA as a job has very strict guidelines, and we need to have more guidelines for PM
At Scripps we are able to build relationships across class lines
Maybe there is some way we can foster more relationships with interclass connections
Made FY choose a place for the freshman in dorm survey that they can check that they want a
"community" dorm a lot
Any additional thoughts on student pride and what that means to you and could mean to other students talk to Maddie Ripley!
