The Asian American Sponsor Program (AASP) is a student-run organization that provides resources- in the form of programs, events and individual support- to Asian American first-years and trains upper-term students to develop their mentorship and facilitation skills. The mission of AASP is to create a supportive network of students at Scripps and in the 5Cs and to promote sustained dialogue and action on Asian American issues (intersected with dynamics of class, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, etc.) that affect our students.
[AASP] Sponsors create goodie bags for their sponsees to build a relationship, as well as to help foster community and growth. Sponsors also work together to plan a minimum of 3 large events, 3 study breaks, and 3 workshops per semester. Because AASP is a retention program, many of our events are open to previous members of AASP as well as the 5C AAPI community.
First years who identify as Asian/Asian American (Southeast Asian, South Asian, East Asian, and others), Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Mixed Race, Mixed Heritage, third culture kid, transnational adoptee, Alaskan Native, and Middle Eastern are enrolled into our program as sponsees (as an opt out program), and 12 older students who also identify as AAPI serve as sponsors.
