Funding Advisory Committee FAQs

How does SAS use Scripps student fees?
SAS uses student activities fees to serve the Scripps student body in two ways - through approved budgets for CLORGs and SAS positions and through the Funding Advisory Committee (FAC).

What is FAC?
The Funding Advisory Committee (FAC) is made up of the two SAS treasurers, the Student Investment Fund Officer at Large, the Motley Assistant Manager, and a Student at Large. The FAC reviews and approves funding requests that fall outside the bounds of approved CLORG or SAS budgets.

What are the rules that guide FAC decisions?
  • Each student can receive funding for two thesis bindings per academic year. Students can apply for additional thesis funding for specific projects (e.g. posters) if needed but are not guaranteed additional funding.
    • Other potential funding sources include the Hearst Foundation and Motley funding
  • Each student can receive up to $100 in conference funding per academic year.
    • Students who wish to receive funding for conferences must show that they have applied for other sources of funding e.g. Motley, Scripps travel conference fund, academic departments, SIF, Malott Commons Fund, LASPA, CP&R, SCORE & OSE. If no funding is allocated via another source, FAC reevaluate the conference request.
  • Each student can receive up to $300 for academic testing purposes per academic year.
    • Students who receive funding for academic tests must send their test score document as proof that they took the test in order to be reimbursed.
  • FAC will focus on funding projects/events that in some way benefit the Scripps community.
  • FAC will not fund the following - internship expenses, job expenses, events that charge for participation, events/clubs/speakers that will channel funds to a non-profit organization or charity.
  • If an FAC member requests funding for themselves or is connected with the club that is requesting funding, they must step outside of the meeting when funding is being discussed & decided upon.
  • Requests over $1,000 that are approved by FAC will be presented to SAS during the Sunday meeting following the FAC meeting and must be approved by the officer board.
  • Please provide a minimum of 1 week notice prior to when funding is needed. Funding over $1,000 may take up to two weeks to be reviewed.
  • Seniors cannot be funded for anything that occurs post-graduation.
  • Only Scripps students can apply for FAC

How do you apply for FAC funding? What sorts of projects can be funded?
To apply for FAC funding, please fill out the Funding Request Form. Your request will then be reviewed by the Funding Advisory Committee (which convenes every Friday) and you will receive an email informing you of your funding status decision by the following Monday. Keep in mind that you may be approved, but for a lesser amount that you requested. The email will indicate how much money you have been granted. FAC does not grant funding to events that have already occurred.

How do I submit a reimbursement request?
In order to actually receive the money you requested, you will then need to fill out a SAS Reimbursement Form or contact the treasurers at scrippstreasurer@gmail.com to make the purchase for you. If you would like SAS to make the purchase, you must email at least 48 hours in advance.

How do CLORGs get funding for the following academic year?
In the spring, you must fill out a CLORG registration form in order to be registered with Scripps. CLORG registration forms are available in the Office of Student Engagement. You will then fill out a budget form that lists every event you plan to have that involves spending money. The more detailed you can be, the better! One or more representatives from the CLORG will attend the Scripps Budget Hearings (usually held on a Saturday in mid-April). Each CLORG has a 10 minute slot to talk about how they used the funds last year, plans for next year, and any important information regarding the CLORG’s proposed budget.

What other sources of funding besides FAC can I look for?
  • Scripps Student Investment Fund: Gives out funding once a year in fall, around October/November
  • The Motley Coffee House: Assistant Head Manager
  • SAS positions: If you have an event that corresponds closely with a SAS chair’s position, contact them and ask about co-sponsoring the event
  • Residential Life: RAs also have a budget for programming, you can co-sponsor events with them
  • Scripps CLORGS
  • 5C Clubs and Organizations
  • Malott Commons Programming
  • PACDI: Diversity related events
  • OSE Office (Office of Student Engagement)
  • Scripps President Amy Marcus-Newhall
